About the company

Northern Community Legal Service was originally named Para Districts Community Legal Service. It was established in 1990 with State funding and expanded in the following year with funding from the Commonwealth. In 1995, it took on a Financial Counselling Program funded by the Commonwealth Department of Families and Community Services. The name was changed to Northern Community Legal Service following a review of Community Legal Services in SA. It has been providing free legal services in Adelaide's north for 35 years.

It operates from offices in the northern suburbs of Adelaide. It provides advice and assistance in areas of law including Tenancy, Employment, Minor Criminal, Family Law Property and Parenting, and Migration. It offers community legal education through lawyers attending community groups. It provides a virtual law clerk tool called Clerq. It won the Salisbury City Centre Business Award (Community Services) in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.

What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

Patience and practical guidance are the qualities that come through most strongly in accounts of Northern Community Legal Service in Salisbury, covering matters from assistance with applications to representation in the Adelaide Magistrates Court. Reviewers repeatedly single out Khurshida Shabnam, describing her representation of a client in court and her handling of a difficult legal dispute with a combination of expertise and genuine care, and Amanjot is also named for knowledgeable support offered steadily through a legal issue.

Friendliness and respect run through the feedback, with clients describing staff who take a real interest in their problems and give clear advice without unnecessary complication. Speed and effectiveness feature often, including one account of an application progressed quickly and with encouragement that made a meaningful difference at a low point. Being kept informed and listened to is another theme, and several people note that guidance continued beyond the initial consultation.

Less favourable comment centres on how some family law matters were assessed, with a small number of reviewers questioning the evaluation of a parenting dispute that had gone through family dispute resolution and expressing frustration at the advice they received. On balance the feedback reflects strong appreciation for the individual lawyers alongside some dissatisfaction with the handling of particular matters.

Our lawyer, Kurshida Shabnam, from Northern Community Legal Service did an amazing job, from the consultation in her office , to liaising with us and SAPOL, to appearing in Adelaide Magistrates Court for our client. Her professional, highly competent representation was much appreciated.

“I had an outstanding experience with Legal Services. Matthew Huxter, in particular, put in an incredible amount of effort to uncover the truth. Thanks to his dedication, I was ultimately proven innocent in court. I, Chaman, highly recommend their services—they are exceptional

Amanjot Sidhu assisted us with our fencing dispute with our neighbour. He raised brilliant legal points that our neighbour and her lawyer choose not to pursue the matter. I highly recommend Amanjot. He was polite, understanding and patient throughout the entire process. We are very thankful to Amanjot Sidhu.

Abhorrently useless service, apparently a parenting plan that's gone to family dispute resolution "isn't worth the merit" because they don't understand why it went to FDR in the first place. If we could have avoided FDR and sorted it out with just mediation we obviously would have. "Do you think youre competent to represent yourself" Obviously we are much more competent than someone confused, unwilling and frustrating. Any bit of information requested we had to tell them multiple times before they understood. A waste of time and resources.
